On the rugged and unspoiled coast of Basilicata, nestled between rocky peaks and the deep blue Tyrrhenian Sea, stands the Maratea Skywalk, a transparent platform of tempered glass that extends beyond the edge of the mountain, creating the illusion of walking suspended in the void.
This suspended walkway is located not far from Maratea’s famous statue of Christ the Redeemer and offers spectacular 360-degree views of the Tyrrhenian Sea, the entire Gulf of Policastro, and the surrounding mountains, all the way to the peaks of the Cilento Park in Campania.
How to get to the Maratea Skywalk
Getting to the Maratea Skywalk is quite easy. In fact, the Skywalk is located on the SS18 state road that runs along the Tyrrhenian Sea. On your navigators you can type in “Skywalk Maratea” directly. Pay attention to the signage when you start to get close, especially if you are going north because the turn-off for the skywalk is practically right after a tunnel and it is not immediately clear what the access is.
Once you arrive in the parking lot (not very roomy to be honest), you can continue on the bike path on your left to quickly reach the skywalk or you can take the scenic “Appreciate the Donkey” trail, which descends over the cliff and then climbs back up to the skywalk.

The “Appreciate the Donkey” trail provides access to Maratea’s Skywalk platform via a path perched on the cliff.
Definitely more spectacular, but if you prefer to get to the skywalk platform quickly and easily, you can go straight for the bike path that is to the left of the trail entrance.

Using the bike path in a few minutes you will be on the Skywalk platform.
However, it is not all paved: in some places you will be able to see the void below you, although not of exaggerated heights, but the effect is nonetheless striking.
For this path we walk easily and almost immediately come to a clearing where there are some benches to rest if necessary. Then a few more meters and we arrive at the Skywalk platform.
A visual plunge into infinity
As soon as you step onto the Skywalk, you are enveloped by a feeling of lightness. Beneath your feet, nothing seems to separate you from the void but a crystal reflecting sunlight like a mirror of water.
The gaze is lost in a 360-degree panorama: the Gulf of Policastro opens up like a blue embrace and the view reaches as far as the peaks of Cilento in Campania, the shimmering waters of the Tyrrhenian Sea dotted with tiny boats, while the horizon merges with the sky in an endless shade of blue.

One part of the skywalk is made of stone and rests on the solid earth; the second part is a transparent crystal exposed on the cliff from which one can see the void hundreds of meters below.
The effect is truly impressive, indescribable in words or photos.
